Perl-DeLisle to hold Sanford infectious disease Professorship

Dr. Trish Perl-DeLisle, Professor of Internal Medicine, has been named holder of the Jay P. Sanford Professorship in Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Perl-DeLisle, who joined the faculty at UT Southwestern over the summer, formerly served as a Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Pathology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and in Epidemiology at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Dr. Perl-DeLisle graduated from and received her medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Science degree from McGill University in Montreal. She completed a residency in internal medicine at McGill University and a fellowship in infectious diseases and clinical epidemiology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

She is the former President of the Society of Hospital Epidemiologists of America and has served on advisory panels for the National Academy of Medicine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the World Health Organization and been a consultant to the National Institutes of Health and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

An active researcher, Dr. Perl-DeLisle has been a principal or co-principal investigator on multiple studies funded by the CDC and the Veteran’s Affairs Administration over the years. She has authored or coauthored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles. Dr. Perl-DeLisle has helped with the management of international outbreaks, including severe acute respiratory syndrome and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirous, and consults internationally with governments on guideline development and strategies to prevent health care associated infections and antimicrobial resistance.  

EM Academy for Diversity and Inclusion recognizes Pierce

Dr. Ava Pierce, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, has been selected as Outstanding Academician by the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine’s Academy for Diversity and Inclusion in Emergency Medicine.

Deeply involved in the UT Southwestern’s Office of Faculty Diversity & Development, Dr. Pierce has served as a faculty mentor for the Housestaff Emerging Academy of Leaders (HEAL) Program since its inception. The program’s monthly meetings aim to help minority residents develop leadership and life skills.

Dr. Pierce has also worked closely with medical students in the Leadership Now! development program and the “Gotcha Covered” mentoring program for underrepresented minorities.

Dr. Pierce also has helped develop the Emergency Medicine Medical Student Research Program for underrepresented minority medical students, getting them more involved in research projects, honing skill sets, and mentoring interaction with faculty members. 

“Dr. Pierce is a humble, caring, hardworking individual,” said Dr. Larissa Velez, Professor of Emergency Medicine who holds the Michael P. Wainscott, M.D. Professorship in Emergency Medicine. “I think she has done a fantastic job of volunteering her time and skill set so that UT Southwestern is a more inclusive, culturally competent institution.”

A graduate of Louisiana State University, Dr. Pierce earned her medical degree at Louisiana State University School of Medicine at Shreveport. She completed an emergency medicine residency at Emory University School of Medicine.

Dr. Pierce is the Associate Director for the emergency medicine medical student clerkship, serves as a member of the Medical School Admissions Committee. Her research interests include medical education and cardiac resuscitation.
