Class of 1957: Jerry L. Sims, M.D., has been named 2014 Citizen of the Year in McKinney, Texas. Dr. Sims, a general surgeon, won for his professionalism, community and church involvement, and extracurricular activities that improved the city. One of Dr. Sims’ fellow practitioners, Dr. James T. Wilson (UTSW Class of 1959), was recognized with the same honor in 2010.

Class of 1979: Robert J. Rogers, M.D., has been named President of the Tarrant County Medical Society for 2015. Dr. Rogers, a longtime allergist at Fort Worth Allergy and Asthma Associates, follows Dr. Tom Wightman. Dr. Rogers served a residency at Duke University Medical School before returning to Fort Worth to begin his professional career. A Denton native, Rogers has been chair of the society’s legislative committee as well as chair of the Tarrant County Caucus. Dr. Rogers is an active volunteer in the family practice residency program at John Peter Smith Hospital and also advises school nurses in managing allergies and asthma in schools.

Class of 1980: Joseph Spann, M.D., who recently retired, spent three months volunteering with the American Refugee Committee as part of their Ebola Response Team in Liberia. Excerpts from some letters that he wrote during the first part of his trip can be seen in the Travis County Medical Society Journal January/Febuary 2015 issue (Volume 61, Number 1).

Class of 1989: John Redd, M.D., a captain in the U.S. Public Health Service, spent six weeks in Sierra Leone as part of a team from the CDC fighting to combat the Ebola epidemic. Upon his return, he was interviewed by TIME, Inc. about his experience and the interview appeared on their website.

Class of 1991: Pradeep Kumar, M.D., a gastroenterologist in Austin, was selected as the 2015 president of the Travis County Medical Society (TCMS). Dr. Kumar had previously served on the TCMS Public Relations Committee and Executive Board. After medical school, Dr. Kumar completed a residency at Parkland and a Fellowship at UC San Diego Medical Center. He then practiced in Hawaii for three years before returning to Texas. Dr. Kumar can be seen weekly on a local morning news program.

Class of 1998: Luis Nieves, M.D., has been named Medical Director of Texas Pain Relief Group (TPRG), an affiliate of Physician Partners of America. TPRG currently has 13 pain management clinics in operation across the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Dr. Nieves trained at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and John Peter Smith Health Network in Fort Worth in anesthesiology and family medicine, respectively. Following his residency training, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at JPS Health Network. Dr. Nieves was also one of a few selected for a combined fellowship program in interventional pain management at UT Southwestern and JPS Health Network. He is board-certified in interventional pain management and family medicine.

Class of 2010: Paul Fabela, M.D., has joined USMD Affiliated Services, a physician-led integrated health care system. Dr. Fabela, who will practice at the Fort Worth Clinic, specializes in internal medicine. He completed his residency at University of Utah Hospital. Dr. Fabela previously had been practicing in Weatherford.
