Davon Breedlove

How did you become interested in science and/or research specifically?

My interest in science and research began through life adversities and observing how people respond differently to trauma. I became curious about how the brain shapes behavior and adaptation. This curiosity deepened during my time working in behavioral health, where I noticed frequent patient readmissions despite treatment. Through my master’s thesis and clinical training, I came to see research as a tool to bridge gaps and promote more equitable, precise, and culturally informed mental health practices.

Tell us about your research project and its relevance to human health.

While I am not currently leading a research project, my interests focus on functional neurological disorders (FND). Ultimately, my goal is to improve diagnostic accuracy and care pathways, especially for underserved and neurodivergent populations.

Why did you choose to come to UT Southwestern for graduate school?

I chose UTSW for its strong emphasis on integrating clinical science with real-world impact, particularly in neuropsychology. The program’s access to diverse clinical populations, interdisciplinary mentorship, and a robust academic medical environment aligned with my goals of advancing culturally responsive and developmentally informed care. I was especially drawn to the opportunity to grow as a clinician-scientist while contributing to equity-focused research and assessment. UTSW offered the perfect setting to deepen both my skills and my mission.

In your opinion, what makes your specific program one of the top in the country?

UTSW’s Clinical Psychology program stands out for its integration within a leading academic medical center and its wide-ranging clinical training opportunities. The program prepares students to become leaders in evidence-based, equity-focused care across a range of populations and specialties. Faculty are highly invested in mentorship and innovation, and the culture encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and compassion. It’s this balance of scientific excellence and social responsibility that makes the program truly exceptional.

What do you love about your program or why should a prospective student decide to get their PhD here?

UTSW fosters a collaborative and supportive environment where faculty invest in your growth, not just as a researcher or clinician, but as a future leader in the field. The training is rigorous, but it’s paired with a strong sense of community, purpose, and opportunity. If you’re looking for a place that prioritizes clinical excellence, scientific rigor, and culturally informed care, you’ll find your community here.
