General Information

The STARS Summer Science Camps began in 2008 with a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Education Pre-College Division. The camps are designed to provide experience and increase confidence in laboratory exercises for middle and high school science teachers, and to give a head start to students who will take the corresponding science classes the following school year.

Middle School Camp

The 2021 Middle School Camp will consist of two master teachers, five teachers, and 30 rising 7th and 8th grade students. The Middle School Camp is unique in that it is six days with the first day devoted to teacher training without students.

Biology, Chemistry, and Physics Camps

The Biology, Chemistry and Physics Camps consist of two master teachers, ten teachers, and 30 students. For Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, the students are rising 9th, 10th, and 11th graders who will take the subject in school next fall. The camps run for 12 or 13 days, with the first two to three days devoted to teacher training without students.

Anatomy and Physiology

The new Anatomy and Physiology camp will consist of two master teachers, ten teachers, and 30 students. This camp is for current 11th grade students who have not previously taken Anatomy & Physiology. There will be many interactive exercises and inquiry-based laboratories. You will also receive information about careers in science and medicine.

General Information

The camp design and overall supervision is performed by the staff of the Science Teacher Access to Resources at Southwestern (STARS) Program. All Summer 2021 camps will be conducted virtually over Zoom. Before the camps begin, students and teachers will have an opportunity to pick up their demo kits that will be used for instruction and activities. Designated pickup dates and times will be announced for camp participants when they become available.
