REDCap Survey and Data Management Tool

UT Southwestern Medical Center, as a member of the CTSA community, offers REDCap – a self-managed, secure, web-based solution that is designed to support data collection strategies for research studies. This tool provides functionality and features enabling researchers to rapidly develop databases for collecting and managing research data.

What type of projects can be housed in REDCap?

See chart of allowable projects – All projects require a faculty sponsor.

REDCap or Velos?

In addition to REDCap, Academic Information System offers the Velos Clinical Trials Management System. For information comparing the two systems, see Choosing a Data Management System for Research.

  • Fast – Quick project start-up. Clinical report forms can be implemented by the do-it-yourselfer or staff is available for a nominal charge for programming for those not having the time to do it themselves or requesting advanced features.
  • Easy – Intuitive user interface and work flow, readily available online training materials, and assistance from the AIS all make it easy to get started.
  • Fully customizable – You are in control of shaping your database.
  • Secure – Backed up offsite nightly and hosted in a secure environment maintained by Information Resources.
  • Web-based – Enter data or build your database from anywhere in the world over a secure web connection with authentication and data logging.
  • Export data to common data analysis packages – Data export function for Excel, SAS, Stata, R, and SPSS.
  • Data import capability through Microsoft Excel.
  • Multi-site access – Can be used by researchers from multiple sites and institutions.
  • Autonomous user management – Research groups have complete autonomy and control to add new users and set several levels of specific user rights.
  • Advanced features – Mid-study modifications, auto-validation, branching logic, and calculated fields.

Access to REDCap requires a Southwestern ID and password from the UT Southwestern campus. All other access requires institutional email addresses and sponsorship from the Principal Investigator of the project.

  • All REDCap projects require a faculty sponsor.
  • All projects and users associated with a project will be suspended upon the departure of the Principle Investigator from UT Southwestern.
  • Academic Information Systems does not support use of REDCap for FDA-governed clinical trials. Velos must be used for this. For assistance with FDA-governed clinical trials, please contact: IR Call Center.
  • Use of REDCap now requires an REDCap End-User Agreement to be on file with Academic Information Systems. Please fill out the online agreement.
  • All REDCap databases require AIS to move them to "Production." Surveys are managed at no charge, however, there is one-time charge of $300 to support the database project. Please use the checklist to ensure that your database will not be delayed in the "push to production " process. Fill out this form when ready to submit your project for production.
  • Any publications resulting from the use of REDCap should cite its use.
  • The use of REDCap for any survey or project visible to the general public must abide by UT Southwestern's Graphic Standards. (The full policy is available on MyUTSW, the campus intranet.)
