Family Medical Leave

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides:

  • Up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave (up to 26 weeks for military caregiver leave)
  • Job protection and insurance premium sharing (if eligible) for medical conditions affecting you or a family member

Eligibility

You must be employed by the State of Texas a minimum of 12 months within the past 7 years and have worked at least 1,250 hours in the 12 months preceding the start of leave.

Timing

Determined on a case-by-case basis, FMLA can be taken as:

  • A continuous block of time
  • A reduced schedule
  • Intermittent leave

You must give at least 30 days advance notice to UT Southwestern of the need to take leave. If unforeseeable, the notice should be given as soon as possible.
