Benefits and Insurance

Annual Enrollment is July 15 – July 31, 2021.

Annual Enrollment for Benefits allows benefits-eligible employees to enroll or make changes for the upcoming plan year (effective September 1, 2021). If you do not make changes during Annual Enrollment this year, changes cannot be made until the next Annual Enrollment in July 2022, unless you experience a qualifying Life Event.

Important

  • If you do not need to enroll or make any changes and do not need to enroll in UT FLEX, no action is needed. (You must enroll in UT FLEX each year.)
  • There are no changes to premium rates for the 2021-22 benefit year. Employee-only coverage will continue to be at no cost to full-time employees who select either medical plan option.
  • ID Cards: Keep ID cards for plans you are not changing. Expect new ID cards to be mailed to your home for UT Connect and any new plans elected.
  • The new plan year begins September 1, 2021.

Retirement Planning

The UT System Retirement Program has selected five retirement services providers for the UTSaver Voluntary Tax-Sheltered Annuity (TSA) plan and UTSaver Voluntary Deferred Compensation (DCP) plan. Some providers offer additional services.

  • Mandatory Retirement Plan

To aid your long-term financial wellbeing, the University of Texas System automatically enrolls eligible employees into the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) – a mandatory retirement plan governed by Internal Revenue Code Section 401(a). Your automatic enrollment results in mandatory, automatic, pre-tax paycheck deductions and establishes you as a TRS “member.”

The pre-tax paycheck deductions are transferred directly to your TRS account. Member contributions are not taxed until you receive a distribution from TRS. You are vested after five years of service with a right to a retirement benefit. There are also disability and death, and survivor benefits available to TRS members.

In addition to the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), other retirement plans include the Optional Retirement Program (ORP), which is determined by the job you perform at UT Southwestern. The ORP requires a one-year-and-one-day vesting period. You may also contribute to the Tax-Sheltered Annuity Program (UTSaver TSA) and the Deferred Compensation Plan (UTSaver DCP).

  • Retirement Manager

The UT System Retirement Manager gives you the tools you need to start building toward a secure financial future. Retirement Manager is a secure website that enables you to review your retirement savings and help you project how much you may need to save for retirement.

If you are retired, you may need to make changes to your UTSW benefits.
