M.D./MBA

Preventing and treating disease is a crucial part of being a physician. But there is more to health care than medicine. It also is a business. Stay ahead of the curve with a degree that will help you navigate the complex business challenges coming to the health care industry — both regulatory and technological.

Our dual M.D./MBA degree gives you the edge you need to advance your medical career, expanding beyond clinical work and into administration, management, or other leadership roles. Business-minded physicians can become influencers for change in medicine and can work to redefine health care for future generations.

William Hsu

“The MBA program has given me the tools and skills to one day become a physician leader. It is an extremely enriching experience with the opportunity for self-growth. The professors are the top in their respective fields, and working alongside non-medical peers has given me insight into different industries whose strengths can be applied to medicine. It has been one of my best educational experiences.”

About the Program

The M.D./MBA program is a joint effort of UT Southwestern Medical School and UT Dallas’ Naveen Jindal School of Management.

Students in the program typically complete the first three years of medical curriculum (pre-clerkship and clerkship), and then take a one-year leave of absence from UT Southwestern to complete their business education at UT Dallas. Students then return to UT Southwestern to complete the required fourth-year medical curriculum (post-clerkship).

Upon completion of the program, students will receive a degree from each school. The medical degree will be awarded by UT Southwestern, and the MBA by UT Dallas.

Admissions Process

Students interested in the M.D./MBA program should first apply to UT Southwestern Medical School through the standard admissions process. Application to the MBA program should be done in the second year at the earliest.

Once a student is admitted into the medical program, application for the MBA portion of the program will be completed in consultation with a UT Southwestern M.D./MBA adviser.

The exact plan for participation in the dual program is crafted to meet each student’s educational and professional objectives.
