About the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program

UT Southwestern's Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Fellowship Program is an ACGME-accredited program that accepts four fellows per year. Fellows come from across North America, and our graduates build successful careers as clinicians, educators, and leaders in academic medicine and beyond.

Our program is anchored by a large pediatric hospital medicine division with a strong clinical practice and more than 60 faculty members. Faculty have diverse training backgrounds, including med-peds, PHM - palliative care, and PHM - infectious diseases. Fellows work on teaching teams, independent hospitalist services, night teams, and admitting services.

We care for patients across dedicated units, including a 16-bed intermediate care unit for medically complex, high-acuity patients who do not require intensive care and a 12-bed observation unit for lower-acuity, short-stay admissions. PHM serves as the primary inpatient service for general pediatrics and leads several specialty-based services, with subspecialty teams providing consultative support across a wide range of disciplines. The specialties covered include:

  • Neurology
  • Pulmonary
  • Immunology
  • Genetic and metabolic disorders
  • Rheumatology
  • Infectious diseases
  • Orthopedics (infections)
  • Surgical services

Some program highlights include:

  • Broad clinical exposure through more than 30,000 annual patient encounters with a diverse, medically complex, and high-acuity pediatric population
  • Extensive scholarly opportunities in health services research, medical education, quality improvement, and clinical informatics, with access to national databases and dedicated statistical support
  • A structured, fellow-centered educational curriculum
  • Institutional support for combined training pathways and specialized tracks
  • Administrative training with exposure to advanced PHM electives, including utilization management, leadership and healthcare organization, and hospital triage and operations
