Pediatric Hospital Medicine Clinical Affairs

Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty cares for hospitalized children at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, our primary pediatric clinical partner. As the largest quaternary care medical center for pediatric patients in North Texas, Children’s Medical Center Dallas draws patients from North and East Texas, Southern Oklahoma, and Northern Louisiana who are admitted to the general pediatrics floor.

We staff eight to nine services based on seasonality, with a structure that includes:

  • On-site, 24/7 attendings
  • Traditional teaching service model with residents, students, and fellows, or a solo-attending-only model directly providing patient care
  • Strong nocturnist model where experienced attendings provide care overnight, ensuring high-quality and safe care
  • Daily admitter attending to ensure efficiency
  • An observation unit of 12 beds to help manage low-acuity patients
  • An intermediate care unit of 16 beds to help manage sicker children not needing ICU-level care

Because of seasonal patterns, our patient census varies from 110 patients per day in winter to 96 patients per day in summer.

Our faculty members care for a wide range of medical and surgical conditions with varying acuity and complexity (40% of patients are children with medical complexity). To ensure high-quality and safe care, the Division has several interdisciplinary programs with nursing leaders, care coordinators, respiratory therapists, and leaders in the Division and the hospital. We’ve implemented family-centered teaching rounds that bring parents and patients into shared discussion and management planning.

We also serve as primary attending physicians for several specialty inpatient services, with specialists functioning as consultants. The specialties covered include:

  • Neurology
  • Immunology
  • Infectious diseases
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Orthopedics (infections)
  • Pulmonology
  • Rheumatology
  • Surgical services
