Point-of-Care Ultrasound Rotation Expectations & Curriculum

Typical Schedule

First Monday and Tuesday

  • Look at POCUS Activies page on Teams
  • Complete Pretests 1 and 2
  • Submit these tests as two files as directed
  • Read and complete as many online required reading modules as possible after taking Pretests

First Wednesday

  • 9 a.m.: Meet Ultrasound team
  • Orientation to course, machines, procedures, and storing images

Schedule

  • Every Wednesday throughout the course, attendance is mandatory.
  • After your first Wednesday, the Ultrasound team will supply you with dates of resident, fellow, and attending schedules. These scanning shifts will be proctored; more information on when and how will be given to you during your orientation.
  • To gain needed scans for the month (100), students may scan in the morning seven days per a week from 7 a.m. to noon. The student will not be scanning every morning, but planning their time to match the Ultrasound resident, fellows, and attendings.  Structured proctored Ultrasound shifts with Emergency Medicine residents, fellows, and attendings will occur from noon to 7 p.m. on given days according to attending and fellow shift schedules.
  • Additional proctored skill-based scanning shifts based on attending and fellow shift schedule will be provided.
  • Weekly QA, didactics, and simulation procedural assistance from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.
  • Ultrasound Journal club Club once per month.
  • Emergency Medicine residency conference from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays.

Curriculum

Rotators will learn the advantages and limitations of ultrasound. Core topics include:

  • Aorta
  • Cardiac
  • DVT
  • EFAST
  • Gallbladder
  • IVC
  • OB
  • Ocular
  • Renal
  • Soft tissue
  • Thorax

Dress Code

Rotators will need a white clinical coat for visiting hospitalized patients. During class rounds, business casual attire is recommended. Ties are not required but jeans, shirts with no collar, and shirts with inappropriate sayings are not acceptable.

Attendance

Rotators’ days on the Medical Toxicology service are short; therefore we adhere to a strict attendance policy. Please limit absences to only those absolutely necessary.
