Critical Care Medicine

About our Program

The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center provides trainees a comprehensive, multidisciplinary exposure to critical care across a variety of healthcare landscapes. During their training, fellows will learn current evidence-based medicine, advanced procedural skills, and practical leadership traits required to function as a consultant in critical care medicine, regardless of their ultimate practice setting.

Our program offers three unique training pathways:

  1. A 12-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine
  2. A 24-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology
  3. A 24-month pathway for emergency medicine-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine

Fellows in the 24-month emergency medicine program will work 56 shifts in the emergency department over the course of their fellowship. Graduates of all programs will be eligible for critical care medicine board certification upon successful completion of their training. The program provides flexibility for fellows to tailor their rotations to best prepare them for their ultimate practice environment. Fellows can choose to rotate through several critical care settings including Cardiovascular, Medical, Surgical, Burn/Trauma, Neurological, and Pediatric ICUs. The program provides fellows with diverse elective time options, including the opportunity to pursue certifications in Perioperative TEE and Critical Care Echocardiography.
