ACGME Accredited Fellowships
Adult Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
A comprehensive 12-month specialized training experience in the perioperative care of patients undergoing cardiac, thoracic, advanced vascular, and transplantation surgery. UTSW fellows will be taking care of high-risk and complex patient populations at a variety of clinical settings including the modern William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas Children’s Medical Center, and the North Dallas Veterans Affairs Hospital. Critical Care Medicine
The Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center provides trainees a comprehensive, multidisciplinary exposure to critical care across a variety of healthcare landscapes. During their training, fellows will learn current evidence-based medicine, advanced procedural skills, and practical leadership traits required to function as a consultant in critical care medicine, regardless of their ultimate practice setting.
Our program offers three unique training pathways:
- A 12-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine
- A 24-month pathway for anesthesiology-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine and adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology
- A 24-month pathway for emergency medicine-based fellows pursuing training in critical care medicine
Fellows in the 24-month emergency medicine program will work 56 shifts in the emergency department over the course of their fellowship. Graduates of all programs will be eligible for critical care medicine board certification upon successful completion of their training.
The program provides flexibility for fellows to tailor their rotations to best prepare them for their ultimate practice environment. Fellows can choose to rotate through several critical care settings including Cardiovascular, Medical, Surgical, Burn/Trauma, Neurological, and Pediatric ICUs. The program provides fellows with diverse elective time options, including the opportunity to pursue certifications in Perioperative TEE and Critical Care Echocardiography.

Pediatric Anesthesiology
UT Southwestern offers four positions per year in our one-year, ACGME accredited pediatric anesthesiology fellowship. Our goal is to provide an exceptional year of training which will lead to Board Certification in Pediatric Anesthesia from the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Children’s Health System of Texas is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best children’s hospitals in the United States. Our freestanding pediatric hospital is the 8th largest pediatric healthcare provider in the nation. Our 487-bed hospital houses the first Level 1 pediatric trauma center in North Texas, a premier referral Level 4 NICU in North Texas, and a Level 1 PICU and CVICU. Our Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology provides more than 43,000 anesthetics a year and services all surgical subspecialties.

Chronic Pain Medicine
The Pain Medicine Fellowship Program is designed to enable physicians to pursue and excel in careers as specialists in Pain Medicine. Our fellows are affiliated with the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, with board certification through the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Board of Anesthesiology.
This 12-month fellowship includes interventional, interdisciplinary, and acute, chronic, and cancer pain management on an inpatient and outpatient basis. Our fellows rotate through various ACGME required rotations along with electives integrated in order to enhance the overall educational experience. Fellows have the opportunity to rotate through several different sites in order to work with various patient populations and, on average, participate in a high volume of basic and advanced interventional procedures. For those interested in pediatric pain medicine, we offer a six-month experience at Children’s Medical Center Dallas followed by a six-month adult pain experience.

Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine
The Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine (RAAPM) fellowship is a comprehensive, ACGME-accredited, 12-month program designed to train fellows to become experts in our dynamic field. Training includes neuraxial, perineurial, truncal, and chest wall blocks, along with acute pain management for trauma, surgical, and nonsurgical patients. Fellows will also become proficient in the placement and management of perineurial catheters, ultrasound-guided, and nerve stimulator localization techniques.
The 12-month fellowship is heavily geared toward mastering regional anesthesia techniques in the adult population both at University and Parkland Hospitals, however, the fellow will have a pediatric regional rotation at Children's Medical Center along with inpatient and outpatient chronic pain rotations at University and Parkland Hospitals. Through a fellowship in RAAPM, our fellows will become experts in perioperative medicine and will develop the expertise needed to excel in either academic or private practice environments.
The structure of this fellowship is consistent with the ACGME guidelines and sub-specialty common program requirements.

Obstetric Anesthesiology
The Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellowship program at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a 12-month, ACGME accredited training program devoted to the comprehensive anesthetic management of women during pregnancy and the puerperium. During this training, the fellow will be exposed to various aspects of obstetrics anesthesiology, including low and high-risk obstetric cases, interpretation of fetal heart rate monitoring, antepartum fetal testing and high-risk antepartum care, clinical research, and neonatology.
The goal of the obstetric anesthesia fellowship is to foster and develop obstetric anesthesia skills in the high-risk parturient, as well as to enrich the practice of clinical obstetric anesthesia by developing an academic and research-oriented approach to patient care. The objectives of the fellowship are to complete the required clinical rotations, thereby accruing the knowledge and skills needed to take care of high-risk deliveries. In addition, the research rotations will allow the fellow to obtain the necessary academic focus inherent in a university-practice setting. Lastly, each fellow must either publish a case report, original research article, or present an abstract at a national meeting during their fellowship year under the guidance of an obstetric anesthesia faculty member.

Undersea & Hyperbaric Medicine
Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine (UHM) is a 12-month ACGME-accredited fellowship designed to prepare physicians with another primary Board certification for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine. The curriculum encompasses physics and physiology of altered ambient pressure, dive safety, clinical applications of hyperbaric oxygen, and the evaluation and treatment of diving and marine injuries.
Our faculty have over 50 years of combined experience in aviation and dive medicine as well as anesthesia and critical care. The multi-place triple-lock hypo/hyperbaric chamber at the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine is the largest in North Texas. We are active in both the clinical practice of and research into hyperbaric medicine.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology
A 12-month Advanced Fellowship in Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia is offered by the UT Southwestern Medical Center. The fellowship is based at Children’s Health, Dallas Campus and will offer candidates a comprehensive experience in all aspects of the perioperative management of patients with congenital heart disease, from neonates to adults.
Children’s Health is a national leader in the area of pediatric cardiac surgery, with an open-heart caseload of greater than 300 cases per year. This includes the full spectrum of surgical treatment for congenital heart disease, including VADs, ECMO, and transplantation. The exposure will also account for over 800 catheterization procedures a year, and complex management of non-cardiac surgery for patients with congenital heart disease. The Heart Center is a self-contained unit within the main hospital and consists of three operating rooms, two cardiac catheterization labs, a cardiac MRI suite, an 18-bed cardiac ICU, and a cardiac step-down unit. The anesthesia team has five full-time pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists.
