Interventional radiologists were early innovators in the development of minimally invasive alternatives to traditional surgical procedures. Among the early advances by interventional radiologists were the invention of angioplasty and the catheter-delivered stent to treat peripheral arterial disease. While these advances have since been widely adopted, the spirit of innovation is fundamental to interventional radiology and the specialty remains committed to providing noninvasive and minimally invasive solutions to diagnose and treat disease.
We work closely and collaboratively with other medical and surgical specialties in a multidisciplinary approach to perform a spectrum of image guided treatments. These procedures include venous access; dialysis access interventions; percutaneous biopsies and drainages; placement of nephrostomy tubes and ureteral stents; placement of biliary drains and stents; embolization of uterine fibroids; angioplasty and stent placement for both arterial and venous occlusive disease; placement and retrieval of inferior vena cava (IVC) filters; management of portal hypertension; locoregional therapy of liver, kidney, adrenal and lung cancers with thermal ablation; irreversible electroporation; radioembolization and chemoembolization; and angiography with embolization techniques to treat bleeding.

Our faculty physicians leverage their expertise in clinical knowledge and imaging to perform procedures through a precise, targeted and minimally-invasive approach to both diagnosis and therapy. This clinical approach reduces patient risk and pain, and significantly shortens recovery times. We perform a high volume of procedures at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Parkland Hospital, and Zale Lipshy Pavilion. We also provide comprehensive clinical service through outpatient clinics, consults, and inpatient care.
Intellectual vibrancy and technological innovation are core values of the Vascular & Interventional Radiology Division. Our research program includes translational research to bring new treatments from the laboratory to clinical practice, as well as several ongoing clinical trials. - Lipoprotein Omega-3 Fatty Acid Nanoparticles: A Novel Trans-Arterial Treatment for Hepatocellular Carcinoma: Supported by a Foundation grant by the Society of Interventional Radiology, this protocol evaluates novel treatment for hepatocellular cancer using Lipoprotein Omega 3 fatty acid nanoparticles delivered intra-arterial in a rat model.
- Identify Proteomic Biomarkers for Outcome Prediction of Lipiodol TACE Treatment: Supported by a Foundation grant by the Society of Interventional Oncology, this protocol aims at identifying prognostic biomarkers to determine patients who will benefit from specific standard loco-regional treatments.
The Vascular & Interventional Radiology Division provides clinical and academic training for residents and fellows in the Department of Radiology. Our five-year Interventional Radiology - Integrated Residency and the one- or two-year independent residency program is intended to prepare radiologists for successful careers in either academic or private practice settings, and to become driving forces to promote application of advanced interventional radiology techniques. In addition the training program provides extensive training in the interpretation of diagnostic imaging and clinical interventional radiology accompanied by opportunities for research.
