Medical Scientist Training Program Firms

Our MSTP Firms foster students’ identity as physician-scientists and strengthen their mentorship network via faculty and peer interactions. Examples of discussion topics include recent seminars or papers, new research initiatives, clinical specialties amenable to research-intensive careers, physician-scientist workforce issues, work-life balance, etc. Faculty leaders have demonstrated a commitment to mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists, secured extramural research funding while maintaining active clinical duties and represent diverse clinical specialties and research interests.

Each firm is named in honor of seminal UT Southwestern physician-scientists: Michael S. Brown, M.D. and Joseph L. Goldstein, M.D.; Alfred G. Gilman, M.D., PhD; Helen Hobbs, M.D.; and Jean D. Wilson, M.D..

“I have a genuine passion for cultivating future generations of physician-scientists with a wide range of life experiences. Each of the Firm namesake physician-scientists embodies what I strive to become as a physician-scientist and provided critical mentorship or advice at different stages of my personal career. I hope to be that kind of mentor and role model to future generations of physician-scientists by educating them on future obstacles they will face and help keep them on track.”

Rodney Infante, M.D., Ph.D.

Gilman Firm

"One of the greatest joys I have as a lab head and mentor is celebrating the successes of those I have the privilege to work with. Leading an MSTP Firm allows me to witness and support the next generation of physician-scientists as they develop the skills to accomplish great things in their futures. I try to meet the mentees' needs at each unique time and place in their training, which not only differs for each mentee, but also differs for the same mentee over time."

Rodney Infante, M.D., Ph.D.

Hobbs Firm

Tamia Harris-Tryon, M.D., Ph.D.

Haverford College undergraduate
MD/PhD from Johns Hopkins
Residency at Johns Hopkins

“My goal as a Firm leader is to pass on the joy of discovery to training MSTPs and encourage them to embrace their unique perspective as experts in both science and medicine. I want to help students find a sense of belonging on campus, without which they cannot reach their full potential, and appreciate the unique nature of the investment they are making in their own development so they can optimize the returns on that investment.”

Tamia Harris-Tryon, M.D., Ph.D.

Wilson Firm

David McFadden, M.D., Ph.D.

Texas A&M undergraduate
MD/PhD from UT Southwestern
Residency at Brigham & Women’s Hospital
Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital
Postdoctoral research at MIT

"I believe each trainee should develop an individualized career plan and that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t fit everyone. Serving as a Firm leader allows me to help students explore career options and find training environments of excellence that inspire their enjoyment and success as MSTP students. I help open any doors I can for our students, then let their talent, work ethic and outstanding UTSW training take the next steps.”

David McFadden, M.D., Ph.D.
