How to Apply

Residency Applications

All applications for the UT Southwestern Pediatric Residency Program should be made using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Our program participates in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) residency match.

Categorical Pediatrics Residency NRMP Program Code: 2835320C0

We are following APPD/COMSEP recommendations and will conduct all residency recruitment interviews virtually for categorical positions. We perform a holistic review of applications, and interview offers will be extended on a rolling basis starting no earlier than the recommended APPD/COMSEP date. We will conduct virtual interviews between November-January.

We will offer voluntary in-person Second Look events in the second half of February. Participation in one of our Second Looks will have no bearing whatsoever on your ranking with us, as we will have already submitted and locked our NRMP rank list before these events. We will be participating in the NRMP’s Voluntary Rank Order List Pilot Program so that we can guarantee our rank list will be entered and locked before the time of Second Looks.

Application Requirements: Please visit FREIDA™ AMA Residency & Fellowship Programs Database to learn more about our program’s requirements for applications.

  • Physician Scientist Training Program in Pediatrics (PSTP2)

The PSTP2 section of our website has more information on eligibility and an application to this program.

    PSTP2 NRMP Program Code: 2835320C2

  • International Medical Graduates and Visa Sponsorship

The Pediatric Residency Program, including the PSTP2 track, accepts and considers applications from International Medical Graduates (IMG).

If you are not a United States citizen or Permanent Resident, UT Southwestern will request J-1 visa sponsorship through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Anyone who wants to be considered for J-1 visa sponsorship must indicate on their ERAS application that they are willing and eligible to be sponsored by a J-1 visa for the duration of residency.

Please visit the UTSW Office of International Affairs for more information on J-1 visas.

  • Child Neurology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Triple Board and Med-Peds Applicants

Applicants to our partner programs, Child Neurology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Triple Board, and Med-Peds, will apply directly to these programs in ERAS and conduct interviews with them only. You won't need to be interviewed separately by the Pediatric Residency Program.

Representatives from our Pediatric Residency Program leadership will participate in your interview day in some capacity, so you will have an opportunity to ask questions at that time about Pediatrics training within these programs.

  • Visiting Resident Applications

Our program is able to accept a limited number of visiting residents for electives each year. If you are interested in applying for an elective rotation through the Pediatric Residency, please submit this form.

When submitting this form, please be prepared to attach the following documents:

    1. Current CV
    2. Letter of good standing from current Program Director that includes:
      • Rotation type
      • Rotation dates
      • Confirm malpractice coverage during rotation
      • Program Director signature on letterhead
    3. Brief statement of career goals and educational benefit of the rotation you are requesting with us

    Requirements for Consideration:

    1. You must be a current resident
    2. You must have approval from your program director for this rotation
    3. You must submit all documents and form at least 6 months prior to the requested rotation dates

    Requirements Before Visiting Rotation Begins:

    1. There must be space for a rotator on the pediatrics rotation you are requesting.
    2. Your application must be approved by our program leadership.
    3. A Tri-Party Program Letter of Agreement (PLA) must be fully executed prior to your rotation start date. This Tri-Party will be between UTSW Pediatrics, your current program, and either Children's or Parkland, depending on the site of your requested rotation.
      • This process frequently takes 120 days at a minimum after submission to get all approvals and signatures.
    4. Texas license (PIT or full license) must be active beginning the first day of rotation. If your current program is not in Texas, you will need to apply for a PIT and pay for that independently.
    5. You will need to submit a UTSW onboarding packet in MedHub.
    6. You will need to complete all hospital credentialing requirements by the week before your rotation to ensure an on-time start.

Please note that UTSW may delay and/or refuse a visiting resident for any reason. UTSW may also discontinue a visiting resident experience for any reason allowed by the PLA.

Visit UTSW GME Visiting Resident policies for more information.
