Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program Curriculum and Schedule

Fellows in UT Southwestern's Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program will master the four core content categories of clinical informatics:

  • Fundamentals
  • Clinical decision-making and care process improvement
  • Health information systems
  • Leadership and change management

Our program has identified several foundational rotations that first-year fellows must complete in the first half of fellowship, as subsequent rotations will build on these concepts and skills.

Fellows typically complete rotations independently, although some rotations may allow, or require, several rotators at once. In addition to traditional fellowship rotations, fellows audit an evening informatics course per semester within the UTSW Master of Science in Health Informatics Program.

Journal club and board review are fellow-led, adult learning-style sessions that are built in as protected time throughout the curriculum.

Our fellowship structure allows ample opportunities for motivated fellows to independently become Epic certified and accredited across a variety of modules and topics.

Outside of informatics, we expect our fellows to dedicate 20% of their fellowship time to clinical duties within their respective clinical specialties. We believe that staying clinically active is vital to becoming a successful informaticist. We understand that 20% clinical time will look different across specialties, and our fellowship provides the flexibility to tailor each fellow's schedule to keep this commitment.

Conferences

First-year fellows are sent to Epic headquarters in Verona, Wisconsin, at the beginning of fellowship to attend Epic Fellows Week and become Physician Builder certified.

All fellows attend at least one American Medical Informatics Association conference per year.

Fellows are also strongly encouraged to submit abstracts to local, regional, and national informatics conferences. Support is generally available for fellows to attend the conferences where their work has been accepted.
