Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship Program Research and Scholarly Activities

UT Southwestern's Pediatric Infectious Disease fellows select a research project that fits their individual interests and career goals. Research projects can be clinical- or laboratory-based and can involve basic or translational science, clinical research, healthcare epidemiology, or quality improvement.

Fellows may select mentors within the Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease or elsewhere at UT Southwestern. Mentors and a Scholarship Oversight Committee guide fellows throughout their second and third years of fellowship to ensure they complete a work product that meets the requirements of the American Board of Pediatrics.

Recent research projects conducted by fellows have included:

  • Evaluation of the association between blood neutrophil counts and lung function in pulmonary tuberculosis patients in South Africa
  • Implementation of an initiative for antibiotic allergy delabelling in immunocompromised pediatric patients
  • Evaluation of anakinra use in moderate to severe multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection
  • Analysis of transcriptional signatures and severity of disease among Staphylococcus aureus strains causing pediatric acute hematogenous osteomyelitis
  • Implementation of electronic medical record order sets to reduce broad-spectrum antibiotic use in ambulatory pediatric clinics

Research interests of faculty within the Division of Pediatric Infectious Disease span a wide range of clinical and basic science topics, including:

  • Jeffrey Kahn, M.D., Ph.D.: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
  • Yeh-Chung "Dan" Chang, M.D.: Infections in the immunocompromised host
  • Amanda Evans, M.D.: Pediatric HIV, congenital infections
