Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program

The Division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology provides an unsurpassed opportunity for clinical fellowship training in hematology/oncology.

The overall goals and objectives for pediatric hematology/oncology fellows are to:

  • Gain extensive experience in the diagnosis and ongoing care of children with cancer and blood disorders
  • Become researchers and teachers of pediatric hematology/oncology/stem cell transplant

The Division prides itself on an atmosphere that welcomes new ideas, change, and creativity in fellowship education. Beyond training truly exceptional clinicians, we strive to develop the future leaders in pediatric hematology and oncology.

Strengths of the Program

Previous fellows have noted our strengths as:

  • Exposure to diverse patient populations with unique clinical needs
  • Well-rounded learning experience in hematology and oncology
  • Vast research opportunities across multiple sites. In addition to the children's hospital, there is great potential for collaboration through other sites that are part of UT Southwestern.
  • Support system for learners: frequent discussions with fellows about the program, improvements based on feedback, close relationships between all team members, and a very supportive environment for learning.
  • Relatively small faculty size despite the large clinical volume. Because of this, the attendings are knowledgeable in their disease-specific expertise yet remain approachable and responsive. This creates a perfect balance of training, mentoring, and support without feeling isolated or lost.
  • Collegial atmosphere that makes collaboration not only feasible but enjoyable
  • Fellow learning and professional development are priorities. Faculty provide strong mentorship.
  • Great fellow autonomy over their patients

Duration of Fellowship

  • A minimum of three years, as required by the Pediatric Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the ACGME
  • Fellows have a fourth-year option as a faculty member to focus on their research projects and enhance future career development.

Number of Fellows

  • Three to four per year

Director, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Program

Training at UT Southwestern for pediatric hematology/oncology provides you with world-class training in both patient care and research. Our fellows are exposed to a wide breadth of clinical diagnoses in a diverse patient population, allowing fellows to gain clinical skills needed for future careers in clinical hematology, oncology, stem cell transplant, or immunotherapy. In addition, sitting on the campus of UT Southwestern, fellows are encouraged to to work in labs at the NCI-designated Simmons Cancer Center, at the UT Southwestern Medical School, or in the biomedical sciences labs at North Campus. Fellows also have the opportunity to pursue clinical research and obtain master’s training at the O’Donnell School of Public Health. I am extremely proud of our past graduates and welcome the chance to provide you with more information about our program.”

Testimonials

“I chose fellowship at UTSW because I knew that the program had the patient numbers to ensure I would receive a robust and diverse training while having smaller faculty numbers allowing for more personalized mentorship. The environment is one of support and positivity.”
Chelsee Greer, D.O. Class of 2022
Zoe O'Connor, M.D.
“I chose the program at UTSW because of the wide range of opportunities that were available, both in the clinical and the research realm. I felt that the patient volume and diversity from the vast DFW metroplex would provide ample clinical training, and the academic rigor of UTSW would provide many options for a meaningful research project in my second and third year.”
Zoe O'Connor, M.D. Class of 2023
Gabriella Nguyen, M.D.
“lt was easy to choose this program because of the faculty that make this program great. Finding valuable mentorship was always a priority to me and every faculty member I met I could see being a mentor to me in their own way.”
