VROC One-Health Symposium

In June 2025, our Department held the inaugural VROC One-Health Symposium, a groundbreaking event that brought experts in human and veterinary medicine together from across the country. Centered around the "One Medicine" concept, our symposium explored topics such as SMART trials in clinical research, advanced therapeutic devices in veterinary oncology, and translational oncology trials in companion animals. To highlight the voices behind this collaborative effort, we sat down with several symposium speakers to hear their perspectives on VROC, the promise of One-Health research, and what the future holds for cross-species clinical trials.

  • Bailey May

Our first canine graduate, Bailey May, is an 8-year-old poodle who had surgery to remove a mast cell tumor on her leg. After surgery, she was referred to us by her veterinarian for further care. Staging revealed metastasis of her mast cell tumor in her lymph node. Bailey underwent cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) treatment in her metastatic lymph node and is currently in full remission.

  • Chai

Chai is a 14-year-old Siberian husky with oral melanoma. His treatment included a calreticulin-enhancing nanoparticle to reengineer the tumor microenvironment and activate the immune system. The boost was enhanced with a checkpoint inhibitor and high-intensity focused ultrasound.
