Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Program Curriculum and Schedule
Fellows in UT Southwestern's Pediatric Rheumatology Fellowship Program gain comprehensive training in the diagnosis and management of pediatric rheumatic diseases while developing skills as educators, investigators, and advocates, and cultivating a foundation for lifelong learning.
Fellows learn through:
- High-volume outpatient clinics
- Inpatient consult services
- Multidisciplinary care teams
- Structured didactics
- Hands-on musculoskeletal ultrasound training
- Mentored scholarly projects
Fellows receive training from faculty in UT Southwestern's Division of Pediatric Rheumatology, faculty from other divisions across UT Southwestern Medical Center, and Scottish Rite for Children faculty in sports medicine and musculoskeletal radiology.
Rotation Schedule
Year 1
- Four outpatient clinics weekly; inpatient consult service approximately two weeks per month
Years 2-3
- Two outpatient continuity clinics weekly; inpatient consult service approximately one week per month
- Elective experiences: Uveitis Clinic, Immunology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, Nephrology, Sports Medicine, and Musculoskeletal Radiology
- Research blocks: Focused work on scholarly projects
Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Curriculum

The musculoskeletal ultrasound (US) curriculum occurs throughout the three years of training.
- Monthly didactic sessions
- Hands-on pediatric scanning sessions
- US-guided injections in the OR
- Cadaver practice sessions
- Support for the Ultrasound School of North American Rheumatologists (USSONAR)

Fellows attend conferences regularly, including:
- Pediatric rheumatology didactics
- Board review
- Division Journal Club
- Internal Medicine Rheumatology Grand Rounds
- Radiology rounds
- Pathology rounds (muscle, renal)
- Department of Pediatrics fellow retreats
