About the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program

The UT Southwestern Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program was developed by Charles Rosenfeld, M.D., using guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP), and the Organization of Neonatal-Perinatal Training Program Directors. The fellowship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Since 1980, the program has trained approximately 100 neonatologists. Graduates have pursued careers in academic neonatology and clinical practice, both in the United States and internationally. The program has a strong record of scholarly productivity, with 90% of graduates publishing at least one manuscript from their fellowship research, and a 95% success rate on the ABP Neonatal-Perinatal sub-board examination.

Fellows develop expertise in the care of critically ill newborns, evidence-based neonatal practice, fetal and neonatal physiology, quality improvement, scholarly inquiry, teaching, and leadership.

Fellows train in a collegial environment that encourages growth, curiosity, autonomy, and mentorship. The program supports multiple career pathways, including physician-scientist, clinical scholar, clinician-educator, quality and safety leader, and clinical neonatologist.
