Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program

2025-2026 Critical Care Fellows
2025-2026 Critical Care Fellows

The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center, one of the oldest and largest programs of its kind in the United States, offers a comprehensive and rigorous training experience designed to develop outstanding clinicians, educators, and physician-scientists in the care of critically ill infants and children.

Our program provides extensive exposure to a wide spectrum of critical illness in a high-volume, quaternary care environment. This allows fellows to gain expertise managing complex medical, surgical, and cardiac conditions, and prepares our graduates to be exceptional clinicians in any critical care environment.

Our program remains committed to fostering an atmosphere focused on trainee professional development. We encourage engagement in scholarly activity and other endeavors that help our graduates become academic leaders within the field.

Strengths of the Program

Fellows note our program strengths include:

  • High-acuity and high-volume clinical training: Our fellows gain exposure to advanced therapies, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
  • Clinical schedule: Our program has shifted to a mostly night float model. This increases the number of call-free weeks for protected research time.
  • Comprehensive, multidisciplinary education: Our robust curriculum supports fellow education, including didactics and fellow- and faculty-led conferences, as well as simulations.
  • Simulation: In addition to a monthly fellow-focused simulation, our program is proud to be a regional host for the national Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellow Bootcamp each summer.
  • Collaborative and supportive environment: Mentorship, professional development, and fellow learning are priorities.
  • Strong track record of success: Our fellows have an excellent success rate on the American Board of Pediatrics Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Subboard Examination.

Duration of Fellowship

  • Standard program length is three years, as required by the Pediatric Residency Review Committee (RRC) of the ACGME and American Board of Pediatrics.
  • We will consider experiences in dual subspecialty training (PDF), as defined by the American Board of Pediatrics on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the program coordinator with questions about this pathway.

Number of Fellows

  • Four to six fellowship training positions are available each year, with a fellowship complement total of 16 fellows.

Olivia Hoffman, M.D.

Program Director, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

When asked what makes our program special, my answer is always the same: “The people are what brought me to UT Southwestern, and they are what keep me here.” Having the privilege to work with this team and help our fellows grow clinically and professionally during their training is a true joy. I am so proud of our fellows – both current and past graduates – and honored to have them as lifelong colleagues. I welcome the opportunity to share more about our program with you."
