Pediatric Cardiology Advanced Fellowships
UT Southwestern has positions available for one year of advanced training in pediatric cardiology subspecialties. Each advanced fellowship has its own requirements and application timeline. See below for additional information.
Advanced Cardiac Imaging with a Focus on Fetal Cardiology
Directors: Lasya Gaur, M.D., and Catherine Ikemba, M.D.
We offer advanced subspecialty training in pediatric echocardiography, with a focus on fetal cardiology. Fellows will spend one year of dedicated training in performing and interpreting a full range of diagnostic procedures, including transthoracic, transesophageal, and fetal echocardiography.
Fellows gain advanced experience in fetal echocardiography, including prenatal diagnosis and the art of counseling. Directed instruction is available to develop expertise in 3D echocardiography and 3D modeling. Transesophageal echocardiography encompasses a high-volume and complex surgical service, as well as intra-procedural guidance in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. Additional training is available in cross-sectional imaging, including cardiac magnetic resonance and CT interpretation, as well as exposure to fetal cardiac MRI.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the advanced imaging fellow will participate in the supervision and education of the junior fellows in the echocardiography laboratory. Teaching opportunities include a twice-weekly echocardiography conference to include junior fellows, imaging faculty, and pediatric sonographers, and a monthly multidisciplinary conference with multilevel participants from obstetrics, maternal-fetal medicine, neonatal-perinatal medicine, and cardiology.
Academic scholarship is an integral goal of the fellowship, with the expectation of a first-author publication before graduation. It is our mission to educate and train future academic, clinical, and research leaders in pediatric echocardiography.

Advanced Cardiac Imaging with a Focus on Cross-Sectional Imaging
Director: Tarique Hussain, M.D., Ph.D.
We offer a uniquely robust and forward-thinking training experience in pediatric cardiovascular MRI and CT. Our Cross-Sectional Advanced Imaging Fellowship Program is designed for applicants who want to immerse themselves in high-impact clinical imaging, innovative research, and true multidisciplinary collaboration.
Fellows in this program become deeply integrated into both our clinical and research MRI operations. Our group is actively involved in advancing novel imaging sequence design, 3D modeling and printing applications, biomechanical modeling, and coronary vasculopathy imaging.
Trainees work side-by-side with a diverse and highly specialized team that includes:
- Six pediatric cardiologists
- Two pediatric radiologists
- Three dedicated CMR technologists
- Five cardiac CT-accredited technologists
- A 3D modeling team
- A cardiac MR physics team
- A cardiac CT research team
- A cardiac biomechanics research group
Our imaging environment is exceptionally well-equipped. We perform CMR studies on a dedicated 1.5T Philips Ingenia scanner within the Heart Center, supported by an expanding cath-MRI program, image fusion capabilities, and active research partnerships with both Philips and Siemens.
Coming soon, we will also have a 0.55T low-field magnet that will further broaden our research and clinical capabilities. Our CT resources include two dual-source CCT scanners and a state-of-the-art photon-counting CT scanner.
Fellows also benefit from strong institutional collaborations. We maintain active partnerships with UT Southwestern Radiology and the Advanced Imaging Research Center, as well as UT Dallas. Nationally, we collaborate with many academic centers, including Boston Children's Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, and Mayo Clinic. Internationally, we have many academic partnerships, including with King's College London (UK), École Polytechnique (France), and Heidelberg University (Germany).
These relationships create opportunities, allow exposure to diverse imaging philosophies, and help to form a broader academic network. We now have a strong alumni group that is involved in leading advanced imaging programs at centers throughout the U.S. (and worldwide).
- Two positions are available per year.
- Applicants must be on track to complete a categorical pediatric cardiology fellowship or radiology residency and be board-eligible in their field.
- Applicants holding J-1 visas may be considered; graduates of foreign medical schools must possess a valid ECFMG certificate.
- All applications are through the Central Application Service in SF Match.
- Please refer to SF Match for the timeline of application, interviews, and the match.
Pediatric Heart Failure, Cardiomyopathy, and Transplant Cardiology
Director: Melodie Lynn, D.O.
We offer a comprehensive one-year fellowship in pediatric heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and transplant within a high-volume, nationally recognized program performing more than 20 heart transplants and 15 VAD implantations annually. More than 400 transplants have been completed since the program's inception in 1988.
Fellows receive immersive, mentored training across the full spectrum of pediatric heart failure care, including transplant evaluation and listing, VAD management, peri-operative care, and long-term post-transplant follow-up, supported by a formal curriculum, weekly teaching conferences, transplant selection committees, and multidisciplinary rounds. Fellows gain additional exposure to adult heart failure and VAD care in partnership with the University Hospital.
The program is staffed by six heart failure and transplant cardiologists, advanced practice providers, specialized coordinators, and a dedicated multidisciplinary team, with surgical leadership providing extensive training in complex congenital and single-ventricle physiology. Through a close partnership with UT Southwestern Medical Center, fellows participate in meaningful clinical or translational research culminating in national or international abstract presentation and peer-reviewed publication.
Graduates leave with robust clinical, research, and academic preparation for careers in advanced pediatric heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and transplantation, training in one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States.

Pediatric Interventional Cardiology
Director: Surendranath Veeram Reddy, M.D.
We offer advanced training in pediatric interventional cardiology. Subspecialty fellows will spend one year in the catheterization laboratory performing a full range of diagnostic and interventional procedures, with the goal of performing these procedures independently upon completion of their training.
We have a busy catheterization service with two cardiac catheterization laboratories, a hybrid cath-MRI suite, and a dedicated cardiac post-anesthesia care unit. This allows our advanced fellows the opportunity to gain robust experience in all aspects of cardiac catheterization care.
In addition to their clinical responsibilities, fourth-year fellows will participate in the supervision and education of the junior fellows in the catheterization laboratory, helping with pre-procedural preparation and intra-procedural and post-procedural management. Academic research is also encouraged, with the goal of a first-author publication before completing the fellowship. It is our goal to educate and train future academic, clinical, and research leaders in pediatric interventional cardiology.
