Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship Program
The Clinical Ultrasound Fellowship Program is a one-year, Texas Medical Board-accredited fellowship program offered by the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Division of General Emergency Medicine.

Developing Future Leaders
Our Emergency Medicine Ultrasound curriculum focuses on enhancing the fellow's ultrasound knowledge and skills while emphasizing program development and management. By the end of the fellowship, physicians in our program will not only excel at using ultrasound clinically, but will also be educational leaders prepared to run their own ultrasound programs. By graduation, fellows will easily be ready to sit for the Advanced EM Ultrasonography Certification Examination.
Mentorship
The fellow will work with the Program Director jointly in all aspects of the fellowship, including:

- Machine maintenance and purchasing
- Billing and documentation
Didactics and Hands-on Training
Fellows will participate in weekly Clinical Ultrasound didactics including:
- Lectures
- Quality assurance
- Journal club
In addition, fellows complete five scanning shifts per month in addition to eight clinical shifts in the ED. They will perform and interpret a minimum of 1,200 ultrasound examinations.
Program Resources
Our main site is Parkland Hospital, a large county hospital that’s among the busiest in the country. At Parkland, we have eight touch-enabled Mindray TE-7 ultrasound machines. We perform bedside reads and quality assurance directly from Q-path as well as a well-developed billing program for exams performed.
Additionally, William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital has two SonoSite X-Porte ultrasound systems and one SonoSite M-Turbo ultrasound system, and Children's Medical Center Dallas has one SonoSite X-Porte ultrasound system. All three sites provide extensive training of fellows, residents, and medical students.
Program Goals
Breadth of Hands-on Experience
- Perform at least 1,200 exams by fellowship graduation
- Incorporate point-of-care and/or limited bedside ultrasound into clinical emergency medicine practice
- Recognize limitations and indications of ED bedside ultrasound
- Learn ultrasound machine operations and knobology
- Understand basic ultrasound physics
- Become proficient in bedside cardiac, abdominal, endocavitary, vascular, and procedural guidance ultrasound exams

Depth of Understanding
- Become skilled in interpreting ultrasound images and video
