COVE started in 2015 as a way to reduce the high level of emergency department visits and hospitalizations among the elderly, which can be expensive and, most importantly, hard on patients who are often frail. In recent months, COVE has become even more valuable – an almost certain lifesaver – as the COVID-19 crisis has forced the vulnerable elderly population to stay at home as much as possible to avoid contracting the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Dr. Roger H. Unger, a longtime Professor of Internal Medicine, a preeminent authority on glucagon and the development of diabetes, and the founding Director of the Touchstone Center for Diabetes Research at UT Southwestern, died Aug. 23. He was 96.

In August, UT Southwestern became the second hospital in the United States to begin using the OR Black Box system in its operating rooms. Developed by Surgical Safety Technologies Inc. (SST) in Toronto, the OR Black Box is installed in five operating rooms at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, where cameras, microphones, and links to patient monitors have been installed.

Biomedical innovator Samuel Achilefu, Ph.D., aims to use the power of light to expose and defend against one of the darkest forces of disease that has affected humankind for millions of years – cancer. On Nov. 2, as the final speaker in this year’s President’s Lecture Series, Dr. Achilefu will highlight the history of promising fluorescence imaging technology, discuss its current state, and provide a glimpse of what future applications and opportunities may look like.

Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, will present at the American Association for Cancer Research’s Annual Meeting on the growth of breast and ovarian cancers, STING signaling, and compartmentalization in gene activation.

Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education in recognition of their outstanding teaching. New members will be inducted at the Academy’s annual Innovations in Health Science Education Conference, scheduled Feb. 22-23, 2024, in Austin.
