Medicare Part A and Part B

UT Southwestern encourages all retired employees and their dependents to enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B when they become eligible at age 65. A disability may qualify you for earlier eligibility.

How Does Medicare Help?

  • Medicare Part A typically covers inpatient health care expenses.
  • Medicare Part B covers office visits and doctors’ fees.
  • Participation in both Medicare Part A and Part B allows you to receive maximum benefits available from the UT SELECT plan.
  • Medicare pays medical claims first, and UT SELECT becomes the secondary payer.

Care Providers and Medicare: Planning Ahead for Medical Expenses

Coverage will vary depending on your choice of care provider and their relationship with Medicare. A provider’s total bill may differ from Medicare’s allowed charges for certain services. When your medical provider accepts Medicare, you are not required to pay the difference between the two amounts. If you do not enroll in Medicare Part B, you will be required to pay the uncovered portion of those medical expenses.

If you or your dependents are enrolled in Medicare and…

Your Doctor Accepts Medicare

  • Doctor may be in or out of the UT SELECT Network
  • UT SELECT pays 100% of benefits approved but not paid by Medicare (subject to UT SELECT plan limitations)
  • No deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance
  • For inpatient care for you or your dependents: UT SELECT will pay the Medicare inpatient deductible, and the $100 per day copay ($500 maximum) will not apply.

Your Doctor Doesn’t Accept Medicare

  • Network and out-of-network benefits apply
  • UT SELECT will coordinate with Medicare
  • Deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance may apply
