Vice Chair of the Radiation and Molecular Oncology Section

 

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is recruiting a senior laboratory research Ph.D. scientist or M.D./Ph.D. physician-scientist to lead and substantially build the department’s Radiation and Molecular Oncology section. The section has existing strengths within mechanistic studies of DNA damage/repair and radiotherapy translation in combination with novel systemic therapies. There is a strong strategic desire to expand/enhance research into realms of immune and metabolic modulation of cancer behavior or other novel areas to understand and defeat cancer.

The vice chair will carry out independent investigation but also provide section leadership and, with the help of department staff, oversee research investigators and day-to-day operations of a large research infrastructure, including existing core facilities and 25,000 sq. ft. of laboratory space assigned to multiple researchers in the department. Candidate will report directly to the Department Chair. The section currently has 18 faculty, including 10 principal investigators. Successful candidate will be provided resources to fund research, recruit additional research faculty, and develop integrated programs with both the Clinical and Medical Physics and Engineering divisions of the department. Candidates should have an interest in initiating new translational projects and collaborative research both within and outside the department, as well as those associated with the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Skills & Qualifications:

Generally, professor level; if close to promotion timeline, qualified associate professor candidates will be considered. Required record of excellence in research accompanied by a strong publication and funding history.

Interest in some of the following topics that include but are not limited to radiation biology/oncology, cancer biology, cancer immunology, cancer metabolism, DNA damage/repair, cancer drug development, and the development of biomarkers.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and motivation for building the program.
  • Eagerness to provide mentorship and guidance to team members.
  • Must have a Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. degree or equivalent. Candidates who intend to maintain a clinical practice must have a medical degree from an ACGME-approved medical school or equivalent and have completed a radiation oncology residency program from an approved institution.
