General Adult Psychiatry Division

Psychiatry is entering a new era defined by better metrics, precision intervention, streamlined integration with medicine, and deep commitment to high value care. The Division of General Psychiatry is designed for that era. Our faculty are translating research into care pathways, deploying data-informed approaches into clinical practice, and preparing learners to lead in innovative systems of care.

Specialized Patient Care across the Lifespan and Family Systems

Our division members apply their general psychiatry expertise to the full complexity of each condition and clinical situation. We offer specialized psychiatric treatment approaches in women’s and perinatal mental health, youth and transitional-age care, eating disorders, trauma, autism, and other specialty needs.

Translating Precision Approaches and Digital Psychiatry

We are working toward psychiatry that is predictive, personalized, and proactive. Faculty across the division use clinical data, digital measures, biomarkers, neuroimaging, and computational methods to better understand illness trajectories and treatment response in mood disorders, psychosis, and related conditions.

Our Faculty at the Medical Interface

General psychiatry is central to modern medicine. Our consultation-liaison and medical psychiatry faculty help teams care for patients with delirium, catatonia, perinatal needs, critical illness, and other complex intersections of mental and physical health.

Meet Our Faculty

Education That Builds Leaders

We teach psychiatry where it happens: in emergency services, inpatient units, outpatient clinics, consultation-liaison teams, public-sector settings, and specialty programs. Residents train at Parkland Health, the Dallas VA Medical Center, and Clements University Hospital. Our faculty mentor residents, fellows, medical students, advanced practice providers, and interprofessional learners to think clinically, ethically, and scientifically.

Growing interest in women’s mental health

“What I hear over and over is people saying, ‘I was in medical school and thought I was going to go into Ob/Gyn until I did my psychiatry elective and found out there's such a thing as reproductive psychiatry and was like, ‘Aha. That’s what I want to do.’”
