Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Division
The Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UT Southwestern provides multidisciplinary evaluation and individualized psychiatric care to children and adolescents and their families. UT Southwestern partners with Children’s Health System of Texas as a primary clinical, education, and research site and, through the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium, has community-based programs to extend mental health services to the north Texas region.
UT Southwestern Medical Center is one of the state’s Health-Related Institutions which collaborate through the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium. This program allows the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry to expand the mental health workforce, develop partnerships in the community and in schools and participate in research to better understand and treat the current psychiatric and psychological challenges facing children and adolescents today.
Patient Care
We provide care at Children’s Medical Center Dallas, Children’s Medical Center Plano, and the Children’s Medical Center ambulatory clinic programs located in Mockingbird Towers. Services cover a continuum that includes inpatient hospitalization, partial hospitalization, day treatment services, intensive outpatient services, and outpatient programs. Our psychiatrists and psychologists assess and treat a variety of mental health conditions (e.g., depression, suicidality, anxiety, autism and developmental disorders, eating disorders, co-occurring medical and psychiatric disorders and special needs of children in foster care). We also liaise and consult with pediatrics and other medical subspecialists throughout the hospitals and Emergency Departments to provide state-of-the-art, evidence-based care to children and families with mental and behavioral health needs.
Education & Training
We train child and adolescent psychiatry fellows, psychiatry residents, triple board residents, pediatric residents, child neurology fellows, and medical students attending UT Southwestern, as well as undergraduate and graduate nursing students; master’s-, doctoral-, and postdoctoral-level trainees in psychology; and master’s-level trainees in play therapy, social work, and family therapy. In all areas, we emphasize evidence-based practice, which sets services offered at Children’s apart from those offered in the general community. Our robust in-house didactic curriculum is part of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship program and the Psychology postdoctoral fellowship program at Children’s Health. We weave research findings, treatment interventions, and case presentations routinely into teachings in multidisciplinary rounds throughout all service areas.
Faculty
Our faculty are experts in all aspects of mental health for children and adolescents. They provide exceptional patient care, lead innovative research, and educate and mentor future physicians. Many hold joint academic appointments and collaborate across disciplines to advance treatment and discovery. Their dedication ensures patients and families receive compassionate care while trainees benefit from exceptional education and guidance.
Research
Behavioral Health experts at Children’s Health partner with UT Southwestern on clinical research, recruitment, and trials. Additionally, the O’Donnell Clinical Neuroscience Scholars Program provides outstanding junior faculty with mentoring in brain disease-related disciplines so that they can become nationally recognized experts in their areas of interest to promote enduring excellence in state-of-the-art, personalized, and empathetic patient care.
