Pediatric Hospital Medicine Education

The Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine actively participates in the educational programs of UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Health℠. All hospitalists hold faculty appointments at the medical school and are engaged in developing and implementing novel educational curricula that are foundational programs for students, residents, and fellows.

Our faculty members teach:

  • UT Southwestern’s categorical residency students
  • Family practice interns from local programs (John Peter Smith, Methodist Charlton, Baylor Health System, and UT Southwestern)
  • All clerkship students at UT Southwestern
  • Trainees doing elective rotations from outside programs
  • Nursing and pharmacy students

The Division has a large footprint in education. Each year, 240 medical students, 25 sub-interns, more than 35 family medicine residents, and more than 100 categorical pediatrics and med/peds residents rotate through our PHM services.

Several faculty hold advanced qualifications in medical education, including master’s degrees in education and certificates in curriculum development. Many are also graduates of prestigious education programs such as the APEX program of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Residents

We offer a pediatric hospital medicine elective for third-year pediatric residents.

Fellows

The two-year ACGME-accredited Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) Fellowship Program is dedicated to training future leaders in pediatric hospital medicine. Our vision is to train future leaders in pediatric hospital medicine who are experts in caring for hospitalized children through an emphasis on excellence in clinical care, education and teaching, and scholarship.

The fellowship was established in 2021 after initial ACGME approval, and, after the first site visit in 2024, was expanded from two fellows per year to four fellows per year.
