Pediatric Endocrinology Education
The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology at UT Southwestern is dedicated to providing exceptional medical education and hands-on training opportunities for medical students and pediatric residents.
Medical Students
Our faculty deliver comprehensive educational opportunities for UT Southwestern medical students. We offer two focused fourth-year pediatric electives designed to provide in-depth clinical exposure and specialized training in pediatric diabetes and endocrinologic disorders. Through these electives, students gain critical skills in diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient management.
Resident Education
Residents training at Children's Medical Center Dallas and UT Southwestern gain valuable experience working in one of the nation's largest pediatric endocrine and diabetes centers. During rotations, residents will:
- Recognize and evaluate normal and abnormal growth and pubertal development patterns in pediatric patients
- Learn to interpret endocrine function tests and appropriately order and recommend diagnostic tests for common endocrine concerns, including thyroid disease, short stature, puberty disorders, and endocrine disorders in newborn screenings
- Manage Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in both inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, as well as specialized care environments such as diabetes camps
Pediatric Endocrinology Elective Rotation
Residents may complete rotations at our ambulatory clinic any time during their first through third years. This elective primarily focuses on outpatient care, offering residents extensive clinical exposure through interactions with diverse patient populations and attending physicians.
Activities include:
- Evaluating both new and established patients across the full spectrum of pediatric endocrinology conditions
- Collaborating closely with attending physicians to discuss patient examinations, diagnostic approaches, and comprehensive management plans
- Gaining specialized training in diabetes management, including insulin pump therapy and patient education programs tailored for newly diagnosed diabetes
Residents interested in inpatient experiences – such as rounds on endocrine service patients and participation in inpatient consultations – can arrange these opportunities by coordinating with the attending faculty.
Fellows
The Pediatric Endocrinology Fellowship Program emphasizes both broad and deep clinical training, as well as experience in clinical research, bench research, or both. Almost all of our fellows have published their projects as one or more papers in peer-reviewed literature, and the majority of graduates take academic positions at UT Southwestern or other medical schools.
