Residency Program

Welcome from Program Leadership

A Welcome Video

About Our Program

The UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management Residency Program aims to develop a diverse group of residents into respected consultants and board certified anesthesiologists, who will go on to continue their training in an anesthesiology subspecialty, develop into an academician, or care for patients in private practice through the guidance and mentorship of our academic faculty. We strive for excellence in clinical care, lifelong learning through scholarly activity and research, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, medical education and simulation, global health initiatives, and personal wellness and resilience.

Our diverse and accomplished faculty of nearly 200 spans several well-respected hospitals to offer the breadth and depth of anesthesia training as represented by all the ACGME-accredited fellowship programs and then some! Our clinical education combined with a thoughtful didactic curriculum, state-of-the art simulation training, and longitudinal experiences in Point-of-Care-Ultrasound (POCUS), Quality Improvement, and Research allows for the development of the next generation of anesthesiology leaders.

Our expansive, world-renowned health system is in one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the United States that offers a reasonable cost and quality of living, an engaging environment for any stage of life, and the hospitality of the south. Two major, international airports make travel to and from Dallas incredibly easy and convenient!

We hope that you enjoy your visit, whether virtual or in person. We look forward to sharing our pride in the Department and Residency Program with you!

Welcome from the Chief Residents

Dear Future Anesthesiologists, Welcome to the UT Southwestern Anesthesiology Residency Program — we are so glad you're here. As this year's chief residents, we remember exactly what it felt like to be in your shoes: excited, a little anxious, and full of questions about what residency would actually look like. We hope this letter gives you a genuine sense of what you're stepping into.

Training at UT Southwestern means you will never stop being challenged. Across Parkland Memorial Hospital, Clements University Hospital, Children's Health Dallas, and the Dallas VA Medical Center, you'll encounter a breadth and complexity of cases that few programs can match. From high-acuity trauma and complex cardiac surgery to pediatric anesthesia and chronic pain management, you will be pushed to think critically, act decisively, and grow into a well-rounded clinician. Our faculty are nationally recognized leaders who are deeply invested in your development — not just as a resident, but as a future colleague. What surprised us most, though, wasn't the caliber of the training. It was the people. This program has a genuinely collaborative culture where residents look out for each other, attendings remember your name, and the relationships you build here will last well beyond graduation. Wellness isn't just a talking point — it's something the program actively works to support through mentorship, a strong co-resident community, and faculty who are approachable and genuinely care about how you're doing.

And then there's Dallas itself. It's a city that has a way of winning you over. The food scene is remarkable, and whether you're into live music, professional sports, world-class museums, or exploring the eclectic neighborhoods scattered across the city, you'll find your people and your place here. We are incredibly proud to be part of this program, and we would love to tell you more about it. Please don't hesitate to reach out — we are happy to answer any questions, share our honest experiences, and help you figure out if UT Southwestern is the right home for your training. We hope to meet you soon.

Warm regards,

Esme Nulan, Dan Mija, Swathi Rayasam, and Jenny Huang
