SOAR R-Grant Writers Workshop

Success in obtaining extramural funding is highly competitive and will likely become even more so in the foreseeable future. Grantsmanship is recognized nationally as an important tool to increase funding of already scientifically meritorious proposals.

The “Successfully Obtaining an R” (SOAR) Program is a grantsmanship program offered jointly by the Center for Translational Medicine and the Office of Faculty Diversity and Development/Women’s Careers. It is directed by Helen Yin, Ph.D., Associate Dean of Office of Faculty Diversity and Development/Office of Women’s Careers; Co-Director, Center for Translational Medicine Education and Career Development Core. SOAR has several modules that can be customized to meet individual needs.

The Intensive R Grant-Writers Workshop with Mock Study Sections is a SOAR module designed to use small group interactive grantsmanship coaching to craft a fundable proposal. It is led by a senior grantsmanship coach (Dr. Yin and others). Participants will attend six weekly two-hour sessions in which they are engaged in peer review of each other’s target grant sections for that week.

Mock Study Sections

The mock study sections are two hours long, and may review four to five grants. On an as-needed basis, we might separate the grants into basic science and clinical science study sections. The participants are required to attend in order for their grants to be reviewed.

We launched a successful pilot Workshop for the June 5, 2016, NIH submission cycle. We are now pleased to announce our fifth Workshop for the October 2018 NIH submission cycle. Application deadline is May 22, 2018. Application form.

Target Audience

Junior faculty conducting basic, translational or clinical research who are actively writing their R-series NIH grants (e.g. R01) for the Current NIH submission cycle.
