During graduate school, I enjoyed attending and presenting at international science meetings and learning how other scientists approach scientific problems. For example, in 1992 I attended the Eleventh International Congress on Fibrinolysis in Copenhagen, Denmark, where, as a student, I was exposed to new methodologies, cultures, and landscapes.

At UT Southwestern, the access to cutting-edge research, as well as the number of thought leaders all in one space, make this a place where you can find a collaborator to do potentially anything. All you have to do is dream it, and then do your campus search, as someone around here is doing some part of what you had in mind.

From the beginning, community generosity has fueled UT Southwestern’s achievements. Numerous academic and civic leaders have shaped the University’s vision, but Dr. Edward H. Cary planted the first seed in 1943 when he pitched Dallas philanthropist Karl Hoblitzelle and a coalition of business leaders the idea for a leading medical center in North Texas.

I remember three important experiences as a graduate student in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program, which involved practical application of skills acquired in the classroom while using my own previous experiences: leading a research study on noncontact boxing for people with Parkinson’s disease; leading tai chi and mindfulness classes at Calvert Place Men's Shelter in their Smoking Cessation and Wellness program; and serving at Camp John Marc as a counselor for kids with muscular dystrophy. These experiences would not have been possible without the relationships that UT Southwestern fosters in the community.

UT Southwestern continues to expand the number of clinical trials testing new treatments for COVID-19, including some newer investigations now offered to outpatients.

This year 140 students from the School of Health Professions will earn degrees for Master of Prosthetics and Orthotics, Master of Rehabilitation Counseling, Master of Radiation Therapy, Master of Physician Assistant Studies, Master of Clinical Nutrition, and Doctor of Physical Therapy. The Class of 2020 marks the largest class of graduates for the School of Health Professions.

Dr. Avash Das, a Ph.D. candidate in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, has been named one of 11 winners in the 2020 Lasker Foundation Essay Contest, an international competition for aspiring bioscience and health communicators.

I have so many memorable moments, including going into the anatomy lab for the first time, studying in the carrels, learning from Nobel Laureates, and of course, graduation. Another memory that makes me smile is the testing, which was held in the most magnificently orange environment known as Gooch Auditorium. It was the perfect testing environment for someone whose favorite color is orange!
