Admissions FAQs

When do you accept applications?

Applications are accepted from July 19 through December 31 each year.

How competitive is the admissions process?

We recommend a minimum 3.0 GPA for basic science courses and a minimum 3.0 GPA for your last 60 hours of undergraduate course work to be competitive. These two GPAs are very important when we select candidates for interviews. We consider your entire application including your knowledge of the profession. We cannot make any predictions regarding a student's chances of being accepted as there is no formula. Your academic performance is important, but the pool of candidates every year is unique and the selection process involves many factors beyond grades.

How many students are in each class?

We generally accept 14 students each year.

I don’t have eight hours of biology. Can I still be considered for admission?

UTSW requires eight hours of biology related coursework. This may vary from other institutions on OPCAS. Examples of acceptable courses include General Biology I and II, Human Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology. Applications are reviewed individually; however, Exercise Physiology, Ecology, Evolution, and Plant-based biology courses generally do not fulfill the Biology requirements for UTSW. If you have a question if a specific course meets this requirement just send us an email with the full course description.

Can I just submit the transcript for the last school I attended or the school where my degree was conferred?

Applicants must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities where classes were taken even if the courses are not a prerequisite.

Can I send transcripts directly to UT Southwestern?

All transcripts must be submitted to OPCAS. Do not send transcripts to UTSW. Transcripts that arrive at UTSW are discarded and cannot be forwarded to OPCAS. OPCAS applications without official transcripts will be considered incomplete.

I’m taking classes in the Fall when the applications are due. Should I wait to submit my application and transcripts until all courses are finished?

No, Submit your application and all current official transcripts to OPCAS early in the fall semester. Do not wait until the end of the semester to submit your application. Clearly indicate the courses you have in progress. At end of the fall semester update your application by sending the official transcript(s) to OPCAS showing completed courses and degree conferral (if applicable).

I’m taking classes in the Spring semester immediately following the application deadline. Can I still apply?

Yes, you are encouraged to apply. However, complete applications and those with minimal outstanding prerequisites may be given priority. Submit your application and all current transcripts to OPCAS during the fall semester. Do not wait until the end of the semester to submit your application. Clearly indicate the courses you have in progress in the fall and the courses you will be taking in the spring. At end of fall semester update your application by sending the official transcript (s) to OPCAS showing completed courses.

If you are admitted, you will be asked to send the official transcript(s) to UTSW showing competed courses and degree conferral.

Be sure to review all of the admissions requirements to ensure you submit a complete application.
