Rules of the Observership

All observerships are for observation only. The individual will not be able to actively participant in any aspect of patient care, including, but not limited to research, examination, patient contact, and other work.
The observer may not obtain patient consent for any procedures, including both clinical and research.
The observer may not have access to MOSAIQ, EPIC, or any clinical applications/systems.
When in a clinical setting with patients, the observer must be supervised by the designated faculty physician. The observer should not be in the clinical area without the faculty physician being present.
When around patients, the observer will introduce themselves as an observer. The observer is not a medical staff member, student, or resident and may not represent themselves as such. To observe a patient visit, permission from the patient must be requested.
This observership will not be considered for any academic credit. It does not constitute as medical education, continuing education, graduate medical education, or any sort of training for licensure or board certification.
The UT Southwestern observers badge must be worn at all times while at the University or in the hospitals.
By signing the observership application, the observer acknowledges and understands that he/she is not covered by the University’s liability or health insurance and no benefits that are offered to the employees, which includes coverage for an accident or injury that may occur on the University premises – regardless of if this incident was related to observational activities.
The observer agrees to recognize and uphold strict confidentiality and privacy of patient information, outcomes, and procedures. This obligation of confidentially is permanent upon the observer and does not expire when the observation is over.
If the observer is asked to observe activities outside of their usual work activities, the supervising faculty member must sign and agree to this.
