Postdoctoral Medical Physics Certificate Program
The Postdoctoral Medical Physics Certificate Program at UTSW, held within the Department of Radiation Oncology, is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs (CAMPEP). CAMPEP has didactic course prerequisites for entry into a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics residency program, all of which are offered here, including:
- Radiological Physics and Radiation Dosimetry
- Radiation Protection and Radiation Safety
- Fundamentals of Imaging in Medicine
- Radiation Therapy Physics
- Radiobiology
- Anatomy and Physiology
The material conforms to the curriculum of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine to cover essential medical physics didactic elements for individuals entering the medical physics profession, through an alternative pathway as published in AAPM report number 197.

Objective
Our goal is to provide our postdoctoral fellows with the basic and applied scientific knowledge that is necessary for further education and research in medical physics and for entry into a medical physics residency—all leading to a career in clinical medical physics.
Certification in medical physics is one of only two non-physician specialties offered by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). A prerequisite for the American Board of Radiology (a board member of ABMS) certification is completion of the Postdoctoral Medical Physics Certificate Program.
Application Process
Currently, the internal program is only offered to current radiation oncology postdoctoral fellows. However, all six courses are offered to graduate students of the Biomedical Engineering (BME) Program. Therefore, in order to take these courses, students must enroll into the UTSW BME graduate program or have been recruited as a postdoctoral fellow at UTSW.
