Pediatric Cardiology Education

Cardiology faculty posed around the purple heart center sign

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology is dedicated to the training of fellows, residents, and medical students.

Medical Students

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology provides opportunities for medical students to explore interests in inpatient and outpatient clinical settings.

Third-Year Pediatric Rotations

  • Acute Care Cardiology Unit rotation
  • Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic

Fourth-Year Electives in Pediatric Cardiology

  • Acute Care Cardiology Unit rotation
  • Pediatric Cardiology Outpatient Clinic
  • Cardiac Intensive Care Unit
  • Cardiac imaging rotation (MRI, CT, echocardiography)

Residents

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology plays a major role in training pediatric residents. Training occurs at many levels. Interested residents can also participate in research endeavors with cardiology faculty members.

Inpatient Training

  • Senior residents typically participate in the Acute Care Cardiology inpatient service, caring for patients on a 44-bed Acute Care Cardiology Unit with the supervision of the attending cardiologist and the partnership of a cardiology fellow.
  • Electives are available for residents to rotate in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, with the Cardiology Consult service, or with the transplant/heart failure service.

Outpatient Training

  • Second- or third-year residents are able to do an elective in the cardiology outpatient clinic under the supervision of the attending cardiologists. Residents can also rotate in the cardiac imaging laboratory to learn more about echocardiography, cardiac CT, and/or cardiac MRI.

Course Descriptions

Fellows

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology’s fellowship program, one of the largest in the country, provides fellows with the training, tools, and philosophy necessary to advance the field of pediatric cardiology within their areas of choice. Our training environment features all subspecialty areas of cardiology, all of which are available to the fellows.

Fellows participate in clinical, translational, basic science, and quality improvement research as a result of their immediate access to our broad and diverse Heart Center faculty, as well as the internationally recognized spectrum of discovery across the UT Southwestern campus. The advanced fellowship program offers nine advanced (fourth-year) tracks (Acute Care Cardiology, Advanced Cross-sectional Cardiac Imaging, Cardiac Catheterization, Cardiac Critical Care, Electrophysiology, Fetal Cardiology, Heart Failure/Transplant, Preventive Cardiology, and Research).
