UT Southwestern secured record funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in fiscal year 2020, in both the number of grants and the total level of funding. In all, 153 grants representing current and future support of more than $253.26 million were approved in the last fiscal year, which ended Aug. 31.

When the esteemed scientist, Professor, and former Chair of the Department of Biochemistry started his first year of college in 1968, he didn’t take his studies seriously. “I wasn’t interested in studying,” Dr. McKnight said. “I was interested in the whole college experience – anything but studying.”

In a year when protests over racial justice gripped the nation, UT Southwestern’s Office of Institutional Equity and Access, Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, and Office of Faculty Diversity and Development found ways to bring the campus together for necessary conversations about race. The offices sponsored both collaborative and independent virtual events to keep staff, students, and faculty engaged even as a large part of the UTSW community continued to work and learn remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since the 1980s, the Perot Foundation has contributed more than $93 million to UT Southwestern, sparking innovation across campus. The Foundation’s recent $25 million gift to support neuroscience translational research will help the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute move science more quickly from the research bench to the patient’s bedside and transform discoveries into improved and innovative drugs, devices, and treatments.
