On March 19, the Medical School Class of 2021 will celebrate Match Day. The milestone event marks when medical students around the country find out where they will do their residency training. To mark this year’s celebration, Center Times caught up with four UT Southwestern alumni from the Class of 2020 who all matched into UTSW residency programs. In their videos, you’ll get a glimpse into their busy lives as first-year residents, learn why they wanted to remain at UTSW for their training, and hear their advice for medical students set to match.

UT Southwestern scientists have identified a previously unknown mechanism by which yeast cells regulate the production of mevalonate, a form of cholesterol. The findings, published online in eLife, could eventually lead to new ways to fight high cholesterol, a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease in humans. “It’s exciting that in yeast, there’s a previously unappreciated way to regulate mevalonate,” said study leader Dr. W. Mike Henne,, Assistant Professor of Cell Biology and Biophysics at UTSW and a member of the Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This may be an important regulatory mechanism for cholesterol in our cells too.”

Dr. Matthew, keynote speaker for UT Southwestern’s annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Celebration, emphasized how justice in medicine starts with the individuals in the room, as well as with UT Southwestern as an institution.

Dr. Nicholas Lam, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Hesham Sadek, has been awarded the 2018-2019 Haberecht Wildhare-Idea Research Grant for his work on a novel strategy to enable heart muscle cells to regenerate.

The atmosphere was electric at the ninth annual Adaptive Sports Expo on Oct. 11, where wheelchair basketball, rock climbing, and a dynamic lineup of other adaptive sports took center stage. Hosted by the Dallas-Fort Worth Adaptive Sports Coalition in partnership with UT Southwestern’s Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in the Peter O’Donnell Jr. Brain Institute and UT Arlington, the event celebrated athleticism, inclusion, and resilience.

Dr. Kenneth Altshuler, a Professor Emeritus and longtime Chair of Psychiatry at UT Southwestern who helped to advance mental health causes in Dallas, died Jan. 6.

Once each quarter, six employees within UT Southwestern’s Health System are selected to receive the Strauss Award, which honors employees in our hospital and clinics who exemplify excellence and professionalism in all they do.

A team led by UT Southwestern researchers has identified a key gene necessary for cells to consume and destroy viruses. The findings, reported online in Nature, could lead to ways to manipulate this process to improve the immune system’s ability to combat viral infections, such as those fueling the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2007, a chronic kidney disease diagnosis led to a challenging journey for Maureen Silvestre. Pregnancy was considered risky due to the disease. Despite losing her first child, Hans, she received exceptional care at UT Southwestern. A successful kidney transplant from an anonymous donor restored her health. A second pregnancy, termed a “rainbow baby,” brought joy back into the Silvestres’ lives.
