Delayed by the pandemic, the 15th Annual UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers (SWAT) Reception and Awards ceremony was held earlier this year to honor six UTSW faculty members for teaching excellence in 2020. In addition, The UT Southwestern Academy of Teachers (SWAT) recently welcomed seven outstanding educators to its latest class of inductees. SWAT members are recognized as educators who strive to provide an academic and organizational environment that fosters excellence in teaching at all levels, rewards superb teachers, stimulates innovation in education, and promotes scholarship in education.

Daniela Nicastro, Ph.D., Professor of Cell Biology, helped plan and direct UT Southwestern’s Cryo-Electron Microscopy Facility, which opened in 2016 with microscopes that can accomplish such feats. At 4 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28, she will give a virtual talk titled “Cryo-Electron Microscopy: Opening a Frosty Window into Cells” as the next speaker in the President’s Lecture Series. Samir Parikh, M.D., had one eye on the rich history of UT Southwestern and the other on its promising future when he accepted the position of Chief of the Division of Nephrology in the Department of Internal Medicine.

Match Day 2019: Student spotlights

The Department of Clinical Sciences has a new name that reflects its broader focus: the Department of Population and Data Sciences.

As COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations stabilized in North Texas, UT Southwestern launched a phased reopening of operations that had been suspended due to the outbreak – resuming nonemergency patient procedures, restarting near-shuttered research labs, and finding new ways to train the next generation of health care providers and scientists during a pandemic.

Rising Star Award

Dr. Anke Henning, an internationally recognized expert in the latest medical imaging technologies, has joined UT Southwestern as Director of the Advanced Imaging Research Center (AIRC).

Dr. Nicholas Lam, a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Hesham Sadek, has been awarded the 2018-2019 Haberecht Wildhare-Idea Research Grant for his work on a novel strategy to enable heart muscle cells to regenerate.

UT Southwestern and The Dallas Morning News joined forces recently to open the doors of research labs to the Dallas-area community with Science in the City. The event provided a look behind some of the groundbreaking research and medical miracles taking place on campus.
