Juice Jacking

partial photo of iphone with charging cable connected

“Juice Jacking” is a type of cyberattack on an electronic device while being charged at a public charging kiosk. When devices are plugged into the infected USB port, the malware transfers data to or from the device. It can steal your personal data, lock your device, or install malware on it.

  • Avoid using free public charging stations.
  • Keep device software up to date.
  • Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet to power your device.
  • Use a “charge-only” cable.
  • Do not select prompts to “trust this computer”.
  • Watch for signs your device may have been infected (e.g., noticeably slower, quickly losing battery life, overheating, unusually high data usage, altered settings).
