Doxing

Abstract Warning of a detected malware program

“Doxing” (also spelled "doxxing") is a form of cyberbullying that uses identifiable information gathered from the internet with the intent to shame, scare, or blackmail the target. Doxing can range from frivolous pranks to serious invasions of privacy. This form of online harassment has become increasingly common in recent years and is a crime in Texas.

To protect against doxing:

  • Use strong passwords and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible.
  • Vary usernames and passwords across platforms.
  • Limit the personal information you share online.
  • Review your privacy settings and consider setting your posts to “friends only".
  • Avoid discussing anything that can identify your address, workplace or contact information.
  • Beware of phishing emails.
