Prepare for a STEM career

Explore Prep prepares high school students for college and gives them early exposure to health, science, public health, and research career pathways by focusing on career awareness and college readiness. Through Explore Prep, students can deepen their understanding of health care professions, develop essential foundational knowledge, and receive mentorship from UT Southwestern students and faculty. 

Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP)

The Health Professions Recruitment and Exposure Program (HPREP) is an enrichment program that exposes high school students to STEM careers through a variety of workshops and hands-on activities.

Among other things, the program is designed to help high school students learn the process and understand the level of commitment needed to pursue a future in science, health care, public health, and research, as well as the rewards to be gained in the fields.

Students also participate in a college fair and mentoring group, with students from UT Southwestern’s Medical School, School of Health Professions, School of Public Health, and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences serving as mentors.

The program offers:

  • Structured skill-building workshops
  • Career panels
  • Discussion of skills for academic preparation
  • Parent/guardian orientation

Workshop topics include:

  • CPR
  • Cow eye dissection
  • Dental
  • Genetics
  • Microbiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Physical therapy
  • Prosthetics-orthotics plastering
  • Public health
  • Suturing

Who It’s For

  • Students in 10th through 12th grades who are interested in health, science, research, and public health careers
  • Space is limited. Apply online.

Program Details

  • Location: UT Southwestern Medical Center campus
  • Three weekends in January
  • No cost to participants
  • Students receive a certificate of completion after the program
