Child Abuse Fellowship Program Goals

Patient Care and Procedural Skills

  1. Learn the components of a complete evaluation for child sexual abuse
  2. Learn the components of a complete evaluation for child physical abuse
  3. Learn the components of a complete evaluation for child neglect and failure to thrive
  4. Recognize mimics of abuse

Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  1. Give family feedback regarding the exam and the findings
  2. Explain concerns of abuse to a family compassionately but effectively
  3. Discuss cases with other members of the medical team
  4. Communicate concerns of abuse to child protective services and law enforcement as necessary

Medical Knowledge

  1. Recognize normal variants of genital anatomy
  2. Recognize and distinguish between abusive injuries and other medical causes that might present in a similar manner 

Problem-Based Learning and Improvement

  1. Identify knowledge deficits in the field and work with faculty to address these deficits
  2. Use principles of evidence based medicine to evaluate best exam type needed for patient and investigation
  3. Use principle of evidence based medicine to guide work-up and evaluation of rare medical conditions 

System-Based Practice

  1. Work effectively with the multidisciplinary team both in the hospital and in the community

Professionalism

  1. Adhere to highest levels of competence and professionalism in court appearance and expert testimony.
  2. Demonstrate adherence to the professionalism standards and code of conduct specific to Children's Medical Center and UT Southwestern
