Clinical Informatics Fellowship
The Clinical Informatics Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited training program for physicians who want to become leaders in the development and implementation of clinical information systems that support patient care, research, and quality improvement.
About the Fellowship
Clinical Informatics Fellows participate in a variety of activities, including:
Clinical Informatics Rotations:
Fellows rotate through health IT and clinical departments at Children’s Medical Center, UT Southwestern, Parkland Memorial Health, and the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, to learn how to integrate clinical data and information technology into patient care.
Research:
Fellows will learn core data science techniques and learn to apply them to clinical informatics research questions. Fellows have the opportunity to collaborate with PhD level data scientists and biostatisticians through the Clinical Informatics Center and Center for Translational Science Awards (CTSA) program at UT Southwestern.
Didactic Training:
Fellows participate in a unique didactic curriculum consisting of a reading curriculum, regular journal clubs, and selections from our Master of Science in Health Informatics program.
Requirements
- Applicants must be ABMS-board certified or board eligible in a primary specialty (e.g., internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine, radiology, etc.) by the start date. Typically, this means you must have completed a residency training program in the U.S. or Canada. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications via ERAS from those who don't meet this criterion.
- We will consider integrated training experiences as defined by the American Board of Preventive Medicine on a case-by-case basis. Please contact the program coordinator with questions about this pathway.

Fellowship Support
Mentors
A robust group of board-certified physician informaticians from a wide range of primary clinical specialties as well as HIT experts, data scientists, nurse informaticians, and pharmacist informaticians mentor and supervise fellows as they engage in real-world informatics practice.
Clinical Informatics Center
The fellowship is supported by the Clinical Informatics Center, which was established in 2019 and has seven primary members and a 30+ member affiliated faculty. The center has a robust publication record and is the home for the Master of Science in Health Informatics in the School of Health Professions. The Clinical Informatics Center offers a monthly colloquium providing health information technology updates and education and is a founding member of the Texas Health Informatics Alliance.
