Fellowship Program Structure
Our Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program offers a comprehensive approach to clinical gynecologic oncology, delivered in a collaborative, multidisciplinary setting and incorporating exposure to radiation oncology, pathology, palliative and hospice care, cancer genetics, onco-fertility, and intensive care management.
Clinical training. Twenty-four months of the fellowship involve clinical training in gynecologic oncology at UT Southwestern’s William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital, Parkland Memorial Hospital, and Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Research. Fellows have 12 months of protected research time. Faculty mentorship and a structured research curriculum in basic and clinical research methodology and statistics empower our fellows to design, conduct, and complete a thesis project, disseminate their findings through peer-reviewed manuscript publications and abstract presentations at society meetings, and secure grant funding for their research studies with program support.
Dynamic curriculum. Fellows participate in weekly and monthly didactic conferences, including:
- Multidisciplinary tumor board
- Journal club
- Morbidity and mortality
- Faculty-led lectures and case-based learning
- Quality improvement projects
- Chemotherapy and preoperative planning conferences
Research Opportunities
The UT Southwestern Division of Gynecologic Oncology actively participates in clinical trial research studies, including investigator-initiated studies as well as studies from national cooperative groups such as NRG Oncology and the GOG Foundation.
Our Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program strongly supports fellows who are interested in developing clinical research ideas with full-time research staff assistance and mentorship through the study design and institutional review board approval process. Our fellows have also been selected for the NRG Oncology Early Career Mentored Fellowship Program, which aims to assist early-stage investigators with developing and advancing research ideas through structured mentorship within the NRG Oncology system.
Fellows are encouraged to develop and complete independent clinical, basic science, and translational research projects and quality improvement projects under faculty guidance and supervision during all years of their fellowship. Fellows must defend a thesis suitable for publication prior to graduation.
Presentations and Publications
Fellows are encouraged to disseminate their research results at local, national, and international meetings and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Our fellows present at several national conferences annually, including:
- The Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO) Annual Meeting on Women’s Cancer and Winter Meeting
- The Western Association of Gynecologic Oncology (WAGO) Annual Meeting
- The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) Annual Meeting
Academic Development
Gynecologic Oncology fellows are active participants in UT Southwestern’s academic community, with access to:
- The UTSW Simulation Center, with leading-edge technologies, such as virtual reality
- Lectures and Grand Rounds across departments
- Specialized courses in clinical and basic science research methodology, manuscript writing, grant writing and funding, and more
- Professional development courses, such as the UTSW Effective Teacher series and UTSW Library resources to support patient care, quality improvement, and research initiatives
Fellows also play an integral role in the clinical and didactic education of UTSW residents and medical students.
Faculty & Mentorship
Mentorship is central to our Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship program, empowering fellows to excel clinically, academically, and professionally.
Our fellows are mentored by distinguished faculty members in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology with national and international representation, including:
- Past presidents for the Western Association of Gynecologic Oncology (WAGO) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)
- Program committee and subcommittees/task force members for NRG Oncology, the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists (SGO), and WAGO
- American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) board examiners
In addition, our fellows are taught by interdisciplinary leaders in radiation oncology, pathology, and palliative care.
