Authenticity: Embrace your true self

Authenticity - a term that embodies the essence of being true, genuine, and unapologetically yourself. Have you ever walked into a room, a meeting, or engaged in a conversation, feeling like you were truly showing up as your authentic self? Take a moment to reflect on the first time you acknowledged your true self. How did it feel? What did it reveal about you?

Another thought: Have you been pursuing activities that resonate with who you are? When was the last time you worked on a project that ignited your passions? Or perhaps, when did you last decline an opportunity that didn't align with your values? For some, authenticity is a way of life, while for others, like me, it took some adjustments, especially when entering the corporate world.

Growing up in a family of six, authenticity was instilled in me. We were taught to "always stay true to who we were and represent the family well." So, authenticity was my way of life until I entered the corporate world. As an African American female, I suddenly found myself under scrutiny - from my hair to my attire to my speech. I was told to "look the part, talk the part, and be the part." It was a pivotal moment of realization.

After doing my own self exploration and embracing the unique attributes that make me, me, I found great success in walking into rooms as all of me. Wearing my fro big and proud, speaking my mind even when it felt uncomfortable. I had to unlearn the things I thought I knew about myself to embark on the parts of me that were hidden.

I've learned the importance of authenticity for several reasons. Firstly, being genuine reduces stress and anxiety associated with trying to fit into unfamiliar environments. It also fosters deeper, healthier relationships because we approach them with sincerity. Additionally, authenticity boosts self-esteem and self-confidence, projecting a self-assured image. Moreover, it enhances communication by facilitating clear expression of thoughts, feelings, and needs, leading to better understanding. Lastly, authenticity encourages creative thinking and innovation, allowing unique perspectives to contribute to projects and solutions.

In a world often swayed by trends, expectations, and the pursuit of acceptance, the journey toward authenticity shines as a guiding light, leading us to a more meaningful and fulfilling life. The journey towards authenticity is a personal one, and my story is just one example. I encourage you to engage in introspection by posing probing questions to yourself, and most importantly, grant yourself the liberating permission to fully embrace your true self.

So, as you find out how one becomes more authentic, here are a few steps to get you started.

Self-Reflection

  • Start by taking time to reflect on your values, beliefs, and desires.
  • What truly matters to you? What are your passions and interests?
  • Consider how your current actions and behaviors align with your core values. Are there areas where you are not being true to yourself?

Embrace Vulnerability

  • Authenticity often requires being vulnerable and open about your thoughts and feelings. Recognize that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness.
  • Share your true thoughts and emotions with trusted friends or a therapist. This can help you build emotional resilience and authenticity.

Align Your Actions with Values

  • Take concrete steps to align your daily actions and decisions with your values and authentic self.
  • Ask yourself if what you're doing truly resonates with who you are. If not, consider making changes to live in harmony with your authentic self.
