This year, two UT Southwestern nurses were named Dallas-Fort Worth Great 100 Nurses. Joining this year’s Great 100 are Shelley Brown-Cleere, M.S.N., RN, Nurse Director of Neurosciences Services, and Byron Carlisle, B.S.N., RN, CCRN-K, SCRN, Nurse Manager of the Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit.

Hak Choy, M.D., former Chair of Radiation Oncology and an internationally recognized expert in his field who has dedicated his career to improving cancer survival rates, has been appointed Professor Emeritus.

UT Southwestern’s 2021 class of Endowed Scholars in Medical Science includes scientists searching for: a way to harness the central nervous system to control pain, to degrade pathological proteins found in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, and to better understand the long-running battle between bacteria and the viruses that infect them.

As a clinician, Dr. Nikita Agarwal hopes to provide high-quality and compassionate care to her patients. Ultimately, she aspires to use her knowledge of medicine and public health to challenge the systems that make access to health care inequitable for patients.

For Dr. Sarah Greenfield, the choice to pursue medicine came from a passion to serve. She is grateful for early work and volunteer experiences – tutoring and mentoring children living in government-assisted housing, serving weekly meals to the homeless, and working at a camp for childhood burn survivors – for igniting the curiosity and empathy that eventually led her to medicine.

The selfless dedication of medical professionals who treated his grandmother for a heart attack following a hurricane years ago always stuck in Dr. James Tran’s mind. Even with many roads still flooded at the time, they came to her rescue, inspiring Dr. Tran to eventually follow in their footsteps.

More than 80 friends and colleagues have donated nearly $600,000 to establish the A. Compton Broders III, M.D. Chair in Emergency Medicine. The funds will be invested as an endowment held in perpetuity, and the Chair’s proceeds will benefit faculty members who will hold the endowment and support educational, clinical, and research endeavors in the spirit of Dr. Broder’s legacy and the mission of the Department of Emergency Medicine for many years to come.

2022 Medical Student Awards

Dr. Kyle Goodman initially studied chemical engineering as an undergrad. But his interest in basic science steered him down a different path, one that would include completing both medical school and graduate school. His chosen specialty of pathology combines his interests of translational research, medicine, and teaching.
